The poem that struck me the most was "Between" by Harryette Mullen. When I read it the first time I Thought the poem was about relationships. When I read the poem in the column formation I interpreted the poem with a better understanding. In column A when I read it virtically it seemed the speaker could be a woman. Mentioning words like "my ass, good, heaven" and then "shit, yesterday, you" I had a feeling the speaker sensed a feeling betrayed. Then I read column C. The speaker mentioned words such as "bad, deep blue sea, and hell" then mentioned "me, this morning, and today." I still got the same understanding that I got from Column A but I realized the meaning of the words were backwards. I understood a sense of forgiveness. However, when I read column B I got a sense of betrayal from the speakers boyfriend or husband. When the poet write words like " my eyes, his legs, her breasts, my thighs and then your toes" I got a sense that there was another woman involved with the speakers partner.
I also realized that this poem and some of the others from the readings this week were very similar to our reading last week. With the sense of betrayal and marital issues the bluebeard poems came to mind.
See you all Tuesday!
